Kaunas to seek hosting 2014 Euroleague finals

Andrius Kupčinskas, mayor of Lithuania's second-largest city Kaunas, says he will seek to have the city host 2014 Euroleague finals in Žalgirio Arena.

"The final four phase in London showed that such level of games should take place in countries where basketball is popular. As Lithuania is known as a basketball country in all of Europe, and Kaunas is the basketball capital of Lithuania, taking the final four to Žalgirio Arena would be a logical move on the part of the Euroleague," Kupčinskas said in a press release.

He stresses that Kaunas already possesses experience in organizing this level of basketball matches – the city hosted the final four of the European Basketball Championship two years ago.

"Another strong argument is that Žalgirio Arena has been a Euroleague arena with the highest number of visitors for two consecutive years," said Kupčinskas.

An average of 13,745 viewers came to a home game of Žalgiris Kaunas club this season, as compared with the regular season average of 13,475 viewers and 12,968 in TOP 16.
