"It's not so easy to understand sometimes policies of some EU countries that are so aggressive against solidarity policy," Berzins told journalists at a joint press conference following the meeting of the Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian presidents in Raudondvaris, which focused on the EU budget for 2014-2020.
Some EU member states want budget cuts but the calls raise concerns in poorer members which receive EU aid from cohesions funds.
"All cohesion policy related matters are also important to keep this pace for our development, to reduce emigration from the Baltic countries. It is one of the most important question," the Latvian president said.
Meanwhile Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė has said that Lithuanian, Latvian, and Estonian "people are working very closely together, opinions of our countries and presidents are very similar" when it comes to the new EU budget.
