The Agreement for Cooperation on Countering Nuclear Smuggling envisages actions of Lithuanian institutions to step up the country's capacities in nuclear safety, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry says.

According to the press release, the plan stipulates an important role to the Lithuanian Nuclear Security Center of Excellence. Established in Medininkai in 2012, the center pursues the key objective of improving qualifications of personnel of relevant Lithuanian and foreign institutions in nuclear safety and security, enhancing cooperation and interaction.

Linkevičius said the agreement would make the Lithuanian-US strategic partnership even stronger.

"Last week, we were all staggered by the Boston events. The horrific attacks reminded us once again that terror goes beyond borders and we must all pool our efforts to prevent terrorist attacks," Linkevičius said in the press release.

The meeting between the Lithuanian foreign minister and the US secretary of state also addressed mutual cooperation and security policies.
