Lithuania establishes diplomatic relations with Rwanda

Lithuania has officially established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Rwanda, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Wednesday.

Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevicius and Eugene-Richard Gasana, Rwanda's minister of state in charge of cooperation and also the African country's ambassador to the United Nations, signed a joint communiqué on bilateral diplomatic relations in New York on Wednesday.

„African states have an important role in the European Union's external relations, therefore, the establishment of diplomatic relations with states of this continent is important for Lithuania ahead of the EU Presidency in the second half of this year,“ the ministry said in statement.

It is also important for Lithuania to secure support of as many as countries as possible for the Baltic country's aspiration to become a permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2014-2015.
