Lithuania might send one or two soldiers to an EU training mission in Mali from the middle of this year, the country's Ministry of National Defense said.

"Lithuania supports the EU training mission in Mali and should join it from the second half of this year by sending 1-2 soldiers," the minister said in a statement send to BNS.

EU foreign ministers agreed in early January to launch a mission to train Mali armed forces.

The EU training mission was put forward after France launched a tactical operation against Mali Islamist fighters who took over control of the country's north in March and want to topple Mali's government.
