Olekas met with his Latvian counterpart in Vilnius on Wednesday. Artis Pabriks the first foreign defense minister to meet with Olekas who assumed his new position in December.

"The cooperation experience of our countries shows that we have huge potential to act together. We are offering to consider the opportunity for Lithuania and Latvia to jointly take part in international operations beyond 2014 after the majority of our troops are withdrawn from Afghanistan," Olekas was quoted as saying in a statement issued after the meeting.

In his words, Lithuanian-Latvian cooperation is becoming increasingly intense.

"In the NATO context, the Baltic states are considered to be one of the most cooperative regions in the field of defense, I am convinced that cooperation between our countries has eventually been taken to a higher level, i.e, we are shifting from the coordination of common activities to integration," the Lithuanian defense minister said.

The two ministers are also attending the unveiling ceremony of a memorial plaque to the Latvian Army's commanders and high-ranking military officers who studied at Vilnius Military School in 1885-1916.
