Lithuania's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations (UN) Dalius Čekuolis and Uganda's chargé d'affaires to the UN Adonia Ayebare signed a joint communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

According to a press release, the establishment of diplomatic relations with African countries is important for Lithuania’s participation in the European Union’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and efforts to secure support for Lithuania’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat in the UN Security Council for 2014-2015.

Uganda, with capital Kampala, is a country in east Africa bordering South Sudan, Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Kenya. Uganda's territory includes a portion of Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. Its total area is about 360,000 square kilometers. Uganda has a population of about 33 million.

The country gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1962, but remained a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Uganda is a presidential republic.

Uganda is the 160th country with which Lithuania has established diplomatic relations.
