Lithuania to look for money for synagogue renovation in EU funds

In early June, Lithuania's Department of Cultural Heritage is scheduled to hold a meeting with representatives of municipalities where Jewish synagogues stand, as well as representatives of Jewish communities. The meeting will focus on how to preserve surviving 100-year-old synagogues, the Lietuvos Žinios reports.

Diana Varnaitė, director of the department, assured the daily that synagogues would be taken care of. In her words, there are three similar Synagogue complexes in Lithuania, and the synagogues in Kalvarija, a town in southwestern Lithuania, were the most derelict.

The Cabinet should be considering priorities of the EU financial support for 2014-2020, Varnaitė said.

"We hope that cultural heritage will be among them," she said.
