Lithuanian Catholic Church speaks against mandatory religion classes at school

Lithuania's Catholic Church does not wish that mandatory religion classes be introduced in all schools, says Kaunas Archbishop Sigitas Tamkevičius, the chairman of the Lithuanian Conference of Bishops.

He spoke in comment of the proposals recently made by the ruling Electoral Action of Poles in Lithuania to have compulsory religious education in elementary and primary schools.

"The step taken by politicians triggers entirely unnecessary tensions and a wave of indignation in the society, as if the Church was allegedly seeking a forced campaign. To clear the doubts, we express disapproval and negative opinion about such proposals. The calls made by politicians have never been harmonized with the top leadership of the Catholic Church," Tamkevičius said in a press release.

"We understand that mandatory classes of religion should be delivered in Catholic schools only but not in state-run schools," said the Archbishop of Kaunas.
