Lithuanian Embassy in Hague pays tribute to Dutch diplomat Jan Zwartendijk

The memory of former Dutch Honorary Consul to Lithuania Jan Zwartendijk, who rescued Jews during World War II, was honored at the Lithuanian Embassy in the Hague on February 16, on the occasion of the Day of Restoration of The State of Lithuania.

Lithuanian Ambassador to the Netherlands Darius Semaška gave a Life Saving Cross to Robert Zwartendijk, who accepted the award on behalf of his late father.

"His activity will always remain a paragon of nobility to all of us," Semaška said.

In 1940, Zwartendijk issued 2,300 permits to Jews who fled from German-occupied Poland and arrived in Lithuania to be able to leave to Curacao. Permissions issued by the Dutch consul let refugees get Japanese transit visas, issued by another revered Jew rescuer, Japanese Concul in Kaunas Chiune Sugihara, to leave Soviet Union-occupied Lithuania.
