"We will respect any decision by the people of Iceland, whatever it is. We also hope that Iceland's great accomplishments so far during its preparation for and during the accession talks will be used in the areas of cooperation between the EU and Iceland. In fact, we got acquainted with each other even more during the accession talks," Linkevičius told his Icelandic counterpart Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson at a meeting in Brussels.
According to a statement issued by the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday, Linkevičius also expressed delight over great bilateral relations, effective cooperation at the UN, NATO, and other international organizations, and discussed cooperation of Baltic-Nordic countries and its prospects as well as current international political affairs.
Linkevičius also invited his Icelandic counterpart to pay a visit to Lithuania.
Iceland was the first foreign state to recognize Lithuania's independence on February 11, 1991. The two countries restored diplomatic relations on August 26, 1991.
