On Monday, the Cabinet approved an action plan for comprehensive maintenance of the Paneriai Memorial in 2013-2014, drafted by the Ministry of Culture.

"The Ministry of Culture is drafting the maintenance concept for the memorial in cooperation with the Vilna Gaon State Jewish Museum. We hope to finish it by the end of July and start coordinating it with Lithuanian and foreign Jewish communities and, based on the coordinated concept, to create conditions over the course of August for a contest for the selection of a draft idea for comprehensive maintenance of the memorial. According to the plan, ideas for the contest should be prepared by October and the best proposals for comprehensive maintenance of the memorial should be selected by the end of this year," the Ministry of Culture said.

Over 100,000 people of various ethnicities, mostly Jews, where executed by the Nazis in the Paneriai wood during the period of German occupation in 1941-1944.
