"There will be an invitation. We would want (the visit) in 2017 or 2018 due to the large number of events then," the prime minister said in an interview broadcast on Žinių Radijas news radio on Thursday morning.

Butkevičius said the meeting with Pope Francis on Thursday should address international issues, social matters, the European Union's (EU) enlargement and the Lithuanian presidency of the EU Council.

Pope John Paul II visited Lithuania in 1993.
