Tilde team achieved the highest quality of machine translation for English-Lithuanian language pair, ahead of other competitors - the leading machine translation companies and research centres from the US, Europe and Asia. This achievement at WMT 2019 marks the third consecutive year Tilde team has taken the leader position in developing machine translation technologies for the Baltic languages.

At WMT participants competed at developing machine translation systems using the same data collection. In four months' time, they had to create a machine translation system based on this data that were evaluated on a test set on news stories. The end results were then compared with most popular online machine translation systems.

The main metric for this task is expert judgement of translation quality for both the competing machine translation systems and the work of professional translators to be then compared with the output of most commonly used translation platforms. According to the English-Lithuanian test results, the system developed by Tilde team received 72,8 out of 100 points, while Microsoft team scored only 69,1. The work submitted by the human translator was rated with 90,5 points. In this competition Tilde participated with an expert team of eight Lithuanian and international neural network architects, including four PhDs.

“Our success at WMT is a great validation of the world class competence of our team and the state-of-the-art Lithuanian-English machine translation technology we are developing. Together with the Vilnius University we are working on a universal multilingual machine translation system freely available to the public. We also use our know-how for commercial solutions to meet the growing demand of customised machine translations,” comments Renata Špukienė, Managing Director of Tilde IT. “Our technology has an immense potential to help the local entrepreneurs become more competitive internationally, lower their operational costs and it can improve translation efficiency by more than 35%.”
