Prime Minister: Lithuania needs good relations with both Russia and US

Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius says that the country's foreign policy should not ignore either neighboring countries or the United States, adding that Lithuania's ties with them should be kept as cordial as possible.

Butkevičius gave his comments on Monday in response to statement made by Parliamentary Speaker Vydas Gedvilas, a member of the ruling Labor Party, who said last week that Lithuania had to improve its relations with Russia, adding that America was too far from Lithuania to supply it with gas.

"I would not want to give my opinion on the Seimas speaker's statement. We have approved the governmental program, we are working actively in the energy field. We are not wandering about, we're on this path. As far as possible, the relations are good with the neighboring countries and the United States of America. I think we should not ignore either of them," Butkevičius, the leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party, told reporters.
