Kosovo appoints its firts ambassador to Lithuania

Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaitė accepted letters of credence from Kosovo's Ambassador Lulzim Peci, the first diplomatic envoy appointed to Vilnius by Kosovo that declared independence in 2008.

The meeting on Wednesday addressed bilateral relations and perspectives on Kosovo's European integration, the presidential press service reported.

In Grybauskaitė's words, Lithuania supports Kosovo's European integration aspirations and is willing to continue sharing its Euro-integration experience. Nevertheless, she says, the success first of all depends on the efforts of the country to pursue fundamental reforms.

According to the press release, the Ambassador said that in was in the interests of Kosovo to make use of the integration experience Lithuania has already gained, and that Kosovo was expecting Lithuania's support on its path towards closer relations with the European Union (EU).

Peci, 46-year-old diplomat with a master's degree in international relations, is co-founder of the Kosovar Institute for Policy Research and Development and founder of the Kosovar Civil Society Foundation. The diplomat resides in Stockholm.

According to the communiqué, Lithuania, in cooperation with Germany, is implementing a 1.7 million euros worth of Twinning Project of veterinary and food safety in Kosovo.

Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia on 17 February 2008. Lithuania recognized the country's independence on 6 May that year. Diplomatic relations were established on 1 September 2008.
