Ignalina nuclear plant's deal with Nukem marks end of cold war

Lithuania's closed-down Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP) and Nukem Technologies signed a tentative cooperation agreement last week, in which they formally recognized their responsibility for part of a funding shortfall in the construction of a solid radioactive waste management and storage facility complex, known as B2/3/4, the business daily Verslo Žinios reports.

The INPP and Nukem have not made any official announcements about the signing of the agreement.

Žilvinas Jurkšus, CEO of the INPP, confirmed the signing of the tentative agreement to Verslo Žinios, but declined to comment on its contents.

According to the daily, other projects that Nukem is carrying out at the Ignalina plant are not discussed in the agreement.

Total claims amount to over 100 million euros. The cost of Lithuanian institutions' failure to act is put at 78 million euros.

The country's officials expect to cover that amount not by using Lithuanian taxpayers' money, but after receiving additional donor financing for the Ignalina plant's closure, according to Verslo Žinios.
