Masaji Matsuyama, Japan's parliamentary senior vice-minister for foreign affairs, has confirmed that investments not only in the Visaginas nuclear power plant project, but also in other spheres of the Lithuanian economy are being discussed with Hitachi.

Matsuyama visited Lithuania earlier this week.

"After meetings with Lithuanian officials, I'd summarize that I see some progress in the development of this project," he said in an interview with the business daily Verslo Žinios published on Thursday.

In his opinion, the Baltic countries and Hitachi would benefit from continuing and completing the Visaginas project after reaching agreement between all the parties on an adequate and sufficient contribution to the project.

Matsuyama said that he personally saw good prospects for developing the Visaginas project.
