The authority will assess possibilities to expand the inner harbor in the future, the Veidas weekly reports.
“To find it out, we will carry out a feasibility study on the maximum parameters of the area of Klaipėda port. The first part of the study will show the scale for the port’s expansion and deepening without taking any compensatory measures, and the second part will deal with measures, such as the strengthening of shores in the Curonian Lagoon. Then we will be able to calculate which of those measures would be justified economically,” Eugenijus Gentvilas, CEO of the port authority, told the weekly.
The projects currently ongoing in the port include the dredging and widening of the port’s navigation channel by Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors (Netherlands). With the contract executed, the internal navigation channel will be widened to 150 meters, from the current 120 meters, and will reach the depth of 14.5 meters in the central part of the port’s area.
