"All is going according to a known schedule of negotiations. This is a piece of news that shows that Latvia sees this project as economically valuable, as important, as competitive and as helping to solve, in an economically beneficial way, the region's key energy problems," he told the Žinių Radijas radio station.
"This can also be an answer to Lithuanian skeptics, who have until now thought that this project does not have sufficient economic justification and that building the nuclear power plant is just the whim of our government or politicians. The Latvian decision shows clearly that the economic benefit factor is very strong in this project, not only for Lithuania, but also for our Latvian neighbors and, I believe, for Estonians," he said.
Latvenergo CEO Aris Zigurs has said recently that Latvia wants up to 20 percent of shares in the Visaginas plant's operator.

Latvia regards the planned Visaginas nuclear power plant project as economically beneficial, Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius has said on Thursday, commenting on the Latvian government's decision to give the go-ahead for the state-owned energy company Latvenergo to set up a company that would participate in the nuclear power facility construction project in Lithuania.
