Liberal leader Eligijus Masiulis: Chevron's withdrawal from Lithuania is government's fiasco

The withdrawal of the US energy company Chevron from the bid to explore for shale gas in Lithuania is a full fiasco of the government of Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius, says Eligijus Masiulis, leader of opposition Liberals.

In his words, the Liberals want a new tender with clear-cut terms and conditions to be called as soon as possible.

"This is a full fiasco for the government, we could see very clearly the lack of coordination in the actions of the government and the Seimas majority in this respect from the very beginning. The environment minister supported the accession of Chevron, while other Social Democrats attempted to block it by chaotic changes of the legal environment," Masiulis told BNS on Wednesday.

In his words, Lithuania appeared to be uncivilized and sent a very bad message to potential investors: "Furthermore, I urge the government and the prime minister to call a new tender for shale gas exploration without delay after clearly establishing the rules and the legal environment."
