He projects that the talks between the European Commission (EC) and Russia on synchronization of electricity system of the Baltic countries with Europe might last several years.
“Speaking about technological aspects, our BRELL (an agreement between Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on common functioning of electricity transmission system) partners took certain decisions in the past, which posed huge risks for the operation of the system,” Poderys said.
A 700 kV transmission line between Belarus and Ignalina had been switched off due to unclear reasons for 12 months, he said.
“It was similar to Druzhba pipeline or to interruptions in the supply of gas to Ukraine. It is risky to work in a system where such things are happening,” Poderys said.
In his opinion, the key question is who takes the ultimate engineering and technological decisions, which can be comparable to political ones in terms of their effects.
