Lithuania's price panel greenlights gas price hike for household consumers

An increase in the prices of natural gas is justified, the chairwoman of the National Control Commission for Prices and Energy said on Thursday as the panel gave a nod to Lietuvos Dujos (Lithuanian Gas), the Lithuanian gas imports and transportation company which intends to raise gas prices for consumers by 19-24 percent from July.

The prices grow due to an increase in Lithuania’s gas import price, Diana Korsakaitė has said, pointing to recent rise in the US dollar exchange rate versus litas.

The US dollar rate had recently risen to 2.6 litas, from 2.4 litas, she said adding that the price of natural gas grew by 9 percent. “All of that was taken into account.”

Meanwhile, Mindaugas Kirslys, head of pricing department at Lietuvos Dujos, told reporters that the prices of gas for household users would also increase due to the fact that the company had kept the prices of gas from rising for one year amid expectations that trends on crude markets would become more favorable.

“The revenues of 17 million litas (EUR 4.9 m) that were not received in the first half of this year actually left no opportunity to take a more favorable decision. Those 17 million litas would have to be recovered of reimbursed in one way or another some day, it is unavoidable,” Kirslys said.

The import price of natural gas, as projected for the second half of this year, would increase by 250.4 litas per 1,000 cubic meters – to 1,390.96 litas, from 1,140.56 litas, Lietuvos Dujos said.

The price of natural gas for regulated users was last raised in July last year – by 14-21 percent, or 29-30 Lithuanian cents per cubic meter. Those prices were left unchanged in the beginning of this year.

The rates of natural gas for household users are recalculated twice a year.
