Lithuania's software piracy rate at 54 percent

Lithuania is the Baltic leader in terms of software piracy, with 54 percent of software used in the country being illegal and the value of illegal software amounting to 32 million euros, a study by the Business Software Alliance (BSA) has shown.

"The average illegal software rate in the world reached 42 percent," Andrius Pranckevičius of the law firm Pranckevičius and Partners, which represents BSA members, said at a news conference in Vilnius on Tuesday.

The piracy rate in Lithuania has not declined for four years now, while the value of illegal software has been on the rise, reaching 32 million euros in 2011.

Lithuania's piracy rate remains "very high" compared with those in other EU countries or even neighboring Latvia and Estonia, the lawyer says.

Estonia's piracy rate was 48 percent and the value of pirated software was 25 million US dollars. Latvia's piracy rate was 54 percent, the same as Lithuania's, but the value of illegal software was lower at 32 million US dollars.

"Unfortunately, we have to admit that Lithuania's illegal software rate is the highest (in the Baltics)," Pranckevičius said.

The ninth annual BSA Global Software Piracy Study assessed data from 116 countries. For the first time, the study also included a survey of 15,000 computer users in 33 countries.
