Lithuania’s unemployment eases to 14.5 percent

Lithuania’s unemployment rate fell to 14.5 percent in the first quarter of this year, down 2.7 percentage points from the same period last year, Statistics Lithuania reports on Friday, citing the results of a population employment survey.

However, the unemployment rate climbed by 0.6 percentage points between January and March versus the previous quarter, it said. The number of jobless people rose by 8,800, or 4 percent, from the fourth quarter of 2011, to reach 230,900 in the first quarter of this year.

Quarter-on-quarter, male unemployment went up by 1.1 percentage points, to 16.5 percent, and female unemployment remained unchanged, at 12.4 percent. Year-on-year, male unemployment rate went down by 3.9 percentage points, and female unemployment eased by 1.5 percentage points.

Youth unemployment rate made up 28.7 percent between January and March, down 3.3 percentage points from the previous quarter and down 5.4 percentage points from the first quarter of 2011.

Long-term unemployment rate in the first quarter was 7.3 percent, up 0.2 percentage points from the previous quarter. The number of long-term unemployed people totaled 116,500 (up 2,200, or 1.9 percent from the previous quarter) and accounted for 50.5 percent of the total number of jobless people.
