Lithuania's jobless rate edged down by 0.1 percentage points in August from July to 12.9 percent. Similar rates were posted by Slovakia, at 14.2 percent, and Bulgaria, at 12.5 percent.

However, unemployment in Lithuania, unlike many other high-unemployment countries, continued to fall at one of the highest annual rates. The country's jobless rate eased by 2.1 points in August year-on-year, the second-biggest decrease in the EU.

The largest fall was observed in Estonia. However, the country provides only quarterly unemployment data, as does Latvia. Estonia's unemployment rate fell by 3.1 points in the second quarter year-on-year, to 10.1 percent from 13.2 percent.

Lithuania's youth unemployment rate (under 25 years) dropped to 24.8 percent in August, from 25.6 percent in July.
