Seventy-eight members of the Seimas voted in favor of the respective amendments to the Law on VAT. None were against and five abstained.

The 9 percent VAT rate also applies to books and non-periodical publications for an unlimited time, and next year will begin to apply to transportation of passengers and their luggage, and newspapers and other periodicals. Technical aids for the disabled will be subject to 5 percent VAT starting in January.

The standard VAT rate has been unchanged at 21 percent since the autumn of 2009.
