When asked if the Baltic countries should follow Poland's example and hold a referendum, Latvian Finance Minister Andris Vilks said that it should be „a political decision.“
„I think we all decided that it should be a political decision. We decided that it should be decided at the political level,“ he said at a joint news conference with his Lithuanian and Estonian counterparts.
„Lithuania has no obligation to have a referendum, because the vote in favor of (euro) membership in 2003 was overwhelming. It is our obligation to join the eurozone as soon as we comply with the Maastricht criteria. Of course, people should be informed,“ Lithuanian Finance Minister Rimantas Sadzius said.
Estonian Finance Minister Jurgen Ligi added that the Estonian Constitution allows the authorities to make such international decisions.
