The Seimas passed the draft Law on Integration of Electrical Energy System into European Electrical Energy Systems by a vote of 121 to one, with two abstentions.
The synchronization of the Lithuanian electricity grid with the European system is part of Lithuania's national energy strategy.
To achieve this strategic goal, the first Lithuanian-Polish electricity link, known as LitPol Link 1, should be put in operation by 2015 and an additional link, LitPol Link 2, should be built in 2018 to 2020. A Lithuanian-Swedish power link, NordBalt, should be launched in 2015.
Other measures include the creation of a regional Baltic electricity market and participation in the Nordic and European electricity markets, as well as the development of competitive local electricity generation capacities.
As the electricity systems of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania still remain integrated into Russia's IPS/UPS network, the management of the power system and the functioning of the market are not aligned with the requirements of the EU's third energy package.
