Lithuanian real estate market starts the year briskly

The Lithuanian real estate market has started 2012 on a brisker note than recent years, with land sales reaching pre-crisis levels of 2005-2008, the Center of Registers announced on Tuesday.

Over 6,400 property units were purchased in Lithuania during the first month of this year, up 27.4 percent from 5,020 in January 2011, according to preliminary data.

Land sales remain the most lively segment of the country's real estate market. In January, land sales soared by 34.6 percent year-on-year to 3,445 plots.

A more thorough analysis of land sales in recent years has shown that the most popular plots have been those of lower value, independently of the area, the Center said.

Sales of single-family houses rose by 29.7 percent in January year-on-year to 485, and apartment sales were up by 18.5 percent to 1,565 apartments.

The data do not include transactions involving state-owned land.
