Lithuanian Railways calls for tenders to reconstruct Rail Baltica segment

Lithuania’s state-owned railway operator Lietuvos Geležinkeliai (Lithuanian Railways) has issued a call for tenders for the reconstruction of an almost 26-kilometer-long segment of the European-gage railway Rail Baltica between Marijampolė and Kazlų Rūda.

The project, which marks the first stage of reconstruction of Rail Baltica’s segment between Kaunas and Marijampolė through Kazlų Rūda, is worth approximately 114 million litas (EUR 33 m).

The winning bidder will have to work out the project, to build a new 1,435-millimeters gage track, to reconstruct railway stations in Kazlų Rūda and Vincai, and to rebuild the existing 25.9-kilometers long 1,520-millimeters gage track.

Bids would be accepted by 14 August, an announcement published in the Central Public Procurement Portal reads. The tender is expected to draw bids from both Lithuanian and foreign companies.

Some 7 kilometers long narrow gage tracks have already been laid in Lithuania between Šeštokai and Mockava, and the works on an approximately 10-kilometer-long stretch will be launched between Mockava and the Polish border soon.

Rail Baltica is one of strategic transport links in the Baltic countries. EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas said in January that 85 percent of project implementation costs could be funded under the EU’s Connecting Europe Facility.

Rail Baltica would link Poland to Finland via three Baltic countries. The total length of the railway in Lithuania is 335 kilometers and the total estimated value is about 1.9 billion litas.

Lithuania‘s railways have been built to the Russian gauge of 1,520 millimeters whereas the European gauge is narrower, of 1,435 millimeters.
