Lithuanian Research Centre to partner with Hitachi

Lietuvos Tyrimų Centras (Lithuanian Research Center, or LTC), a company set up by the Lithuanian public authorities and implementing research projects in cooperation with US technology giant IBM, may soon launch cooperation with Japan’s Hitachi, a strategic investor in a new nuclear power plant planned to be built in Visaginas.

“We intend to open talks with Hitachi as well. To apply the same partnership principles for the projects with Hitachi, not just with IBM... The [representatives of the] Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA) met with Hitachi and discussed potential partnership projects. It was agreed then that the second meeting should be held. Hitachi found several projects interesting. Now we intend to team up with the LTC and MITA and meet with Hitachi once more for discussing the projects that have been selected,” Deputy Economy Minister, Adomas Audickas, told BNS.

“We should work for at least three more months so as to have the letter of intent signed, and it might require as much as six month to have the agreement signed,” he added.

Joint projects with Hitachi would be implemented by the LTC, the official said.

Hitachi Europe CEO, Akira Shimizu, told the Lithuanian reporters last October that Hitachi’s interests in Lithuania were not limited to the planned new nuclear power plant project. He said that the corporation saw high potential in Lithuania for the development of projects in energy, including smart grids, information technologies, infrastructure, and healthcare.

Hitachi’s business areas include information technologies, telecommunications, energy, social infrastructure, construction, electronic systems and equipment, financial services, etc.

The LTC was established by the ministries of economy and education and science in December 2010. As reported, the center and IBM have equal rights to use scientific research results, and Lithuanian scientists are able to work at IBM laboratories in Zurich and Haifa.
