“I cannot speak on behalf of Chevron but I feel that they will stay to work in Lithuania… I believe they will discuss certain details with Prime Minister [Algirdas] Butkevičius [at Tuesday meeting], will clarify the plans and there will be no need to wait too long afterwards – the tender commission should then make a decision on the winner shortly,” he told BNS.
The decision on the tender winner would need the approval of the government, he said.
Chevron submitted the sole bid for the right to explore for shale gas and oil in the 1,800-square-kilometer Šilutė-Tauragė field in Western Lithuania. If the company is announced the winner of the tender and signs the agreement, it will have to invest at least 80 million litas (EUR 23.2m) in exploration.
Update. A meeting between Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevičius and representatives of the US energy giant Chevron, scheduled for Tuesday, has been cancelled.
The meeting is now planned to be held on July 10, according to Evelina Butkutė-Lazdauskienė, the prime minister's spokeswoman.
The meeting was cancelled due to voting on important laws taking place at the Seimas, she said.
