Loading of NATO containers in Klaipėda is carried out by company Klaipėdos Konteinerių Terminalas (Klaipėda Container Terminal). Irena Cepenko, the head of the company's sales and marketing division, told BNS that US cargo alone accounted for NATO transit via Klaipėda last year.

In 2012, 4,119 NATO containers arrived to the company's terminal by ships and 916 left the port as part of the so-called return transit from Afghanistan.

According to Cepenko, a total of 3,266 containers of US cargo were handled in 2011.

She said the income generated by the segment of NATO transit is not calculated separately.

"NATO cargo makes merely 1.7 percent of the containers we handle," the company said in a reply to BNS.

For more than a year, Lithuania has been participating in the so-called Northern Supply Route scheme, which also involves Russia and Central Asia.

Latvian and Estonian ports have also been competing with Klaipėda for NATO transit.
