Opinion poll: Lithuanians skeptical about new nuclear plant but not about investing in it

A half of people living in Lithuania's five major cities oppose the construction of a new nuclear power plant, but almost a third would buy some shares in it, according to a poll published by the weekly magazine Veidas on Monday.

Only a fifth of these polled said that they supported the project and another fifth had no opinion.

Some 18.8 percent of respondents gave a strong "yes" to the question of whether they supported Visaginas nuclear power plant construction under the current circumstances, but 18.4 percent said that they had too little information to give a categorical opinion on this issue. Some 53.2 percent said that they were against the construction. Nine percent gave no answer.

However, 27.4 percent of respondents said that they would purchase some shares in Visaginas nuclear power plant if there was such an opportunity, which is 9 percent more than the percentage of those supporting the project to build a new nuclear power plant together with Japan's Hitachi. Some 54.6 percent of those polled said they would not buy and another 17.6 percent said that they did not know.

Prime Consulting polled 500 residents of the country's five major cities for the Veidas magazine on May 14 to 16.
