Over half of Lithuanians claim they struggle to make ends meet on their income

More than a half of Lithuania’s population (54.6 percent) found it difficult or very difficult to make ends meet with their current income in the middle of 2011, the European social survey conducted by the Policy and Public Administration Institute of Kaunas University of Technology has shown.

Meager 3.6 percent of respondents said that they did not feel a lack of money. The percentage of those complaining about shortage of money was lower among cohabiting couples and higher among people living alone. Presence of children in the household has no effects on income satisfaction, according to the survey results published by the news portal delfi.lt on Thursday.

Some 45.4 percent of Lithuania’s population found their income sufficient to make ends meet last year, which was one of the lowest rates among the European countries that took part in the survey.

The survey has shown that approximately one-third (35.4 percent) of Lithuania’s population had to try to manage with lower income in the middle of last year. Approximately one-fourth (26 percent) said they had to tap their savings or borrow for daily expenditures during the last three years.
