The IrAero service has been opened at the initiative of Ambra Investicijos, a company that has leased the five-star Auska Hotel in Palanga. The company has set up a company named Baltijos Vizų Centras (Baltic Visa Center), which looks for tourists from Russia and helps them to go through all the formalities for travel to the Schengen area.
"We have paid for a certain number of passengers. If the planes are full, we will make a profit. If not, we will suffer a loss," the paper quoted Vitalijus Baranauskas, director of Baltijos Vizų Centras, as saying.
Over 500 holidaymakers from Russia are expected to arrive in Palanga aboard a 50-seat aircraft this summer.
"Russians remember Palanga and its white-sand beaches. They are excited by the possibility of spending their holidays in what previously was a private hotel built for the Soviet Union's leaders," said Baranauskas.
