The winning bidder will have to build the line between the town of Elk, in northwestern Poland, and the town of Alytus, in southern Lithuania, as well as to complete all legal and other formalities for the project, the Polish news portal Wnp.pl reports.

The contractor will be responsible for drawing up a detailed design of the construction project and purchasing of materials. The power line will run via several municipalities, including Elk, Suwalki, Punsk, and Sejny.

Bids are due by February 21. The project is expected to be carried out by October 2015.

PSE is planning to invest 720 million Polish zlotys (EUR 175m) this year, with a total of 9.9 billion zlotys to be invested between 2013 and 2017. The company will use the money to build around 4,700 kilometers of new 400 kV connections and upgrade more than 800 kilometers of 400 kV lines, as well as to build nearly 270 kilometers of new 220 kV connections and upgrade almost 1,200 kilometers of 220 kV lines.

The LitPol Link interconnection is expected to be put into operation in 2015 with a capacity of 500 megawatts (MW), to be raised to 1,000 MW in 2018 to 2020. In Lithuania, the first line will cost around 485 million litas (EUR 140.6m) to build, and the second one, another 380 million litas.

LitPol Link is one of Lithuania's strategic energy projects. The interconnection will link the electricity transmission infrastructure of the three Baltic countries to that of Western Europe and pave the way for an integration of the electricity markets.
