Queues at Lithuanian-Belarusian border may only be reduced through investment

Carriers who get stuck at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border have repeatedly stated that the queues would be reduced by adding more human resources to the checkpoints. Customs officers claim that human resources are used according to demand. Actual capacity of a checkpoint in Medininkai exceeds the design capacity by one-fourth and situation could only be changed through investing into expansion of checkpoints, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports.

Travelers complain that queues at the border have turned into a regular and costly routine.

“It is just six months of talking but nothing is being done, there are no changes. We would make four trips per month before and now we can only make three since we spend two or three days at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border on our way back to Lithuania. We have work to do, we have cargo to ship, but we have to stand in queues,” a transport company’s CEO told the daily on the condition of anonymity.

“We have all-time record capacities now, but we also have queues since traffic has increased considerably and technical possibilities have already been exhausted,” Jonas Miškinis, deputy director of the Customs Department, warned the carriers.
