Tests aimed at assessing the readiness of Kaliningrad electricity system to operate when disconnected from the neighboring systems were carried out in Russia’s Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad on Wednesday, he said.

“In fact, such testing may mean that Russia is starting preparations for the desynchronization of the Baltic countries’ electricity systems from Russia’s IPS/UPS system as it understands the strategic goal of the Baltic countries to function synchronically within the continental European grid,” a press release issued by the Energy Ministry quoted the minister as saying.

Testing involved independent operation of Kaliningrad electricity system during two intervals of 10 minutes each, which in fact showed that the system could function independently, the minister said.

“Successful testing shows that the electricity system of Kaliningrad region may function in isolation as well,” Sekmokas said.

The functioning of Lithuania’s electricity system is currently synchronized with the IPS/UPS system, which covers the systems of Belarus, Russia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
