“Unfortunately, border checkpoints were not warned about the wild boars which spread the infection. The distance between us and the site of the outbreak identified in Latvia is around 100 kilometers. It is the intersection of borders with Russia and Belarus. The probability of infected animals reaching us is high,” the association’s director Algis Baravykas told the daily.
With the sites of the outbreaks coming closer, farmers should get ready to focus on the domestic market, which should drive the prices down, he said. A potential decline in prices, if an outbreak were to be identified in Lithuania, has already been mentioned by both the growers and the processors.
