Swine fever outbreaks in neighboring countries may affect exports by Lithuania’s pig farmers

Swine fever outbreaks identified in Latvia and Belarus have increased the probability of the disease spreading to Lithuania, which may lead to the suspension of export of live pigs and some pork products, the Verslo Žinios business daily reports quoting the Lithuanian Pig Growers’ Association.

“Unfortunately, border checkpoints were not warned about the wild boars which spread the infection. The distance between us and the site of the outbreak identified in Latvia is around 100 kilometers. It is the intersection of borders with Russia and Belarus. The probability of infected animals reaching us is high,” the association’s director Algis Baravykas told the daily.

With the sites of the outbreaks coming closer, farmers should get ready to focus on the domestic market, which should drive the prices down, he said. A potential decline in prices, if an outbreak were to be identified in Lithuania, has already been mentioned by both the growers and the processors.
