"Three candidates have expressed their wish to participate in the competition until now. Some documents can still come by post," Dalia Perednienė of the Transport Ministry's Communications Division told BNS.

One of the candidates, Arvydas Vaitkus, a member of the Social Democratic Party, confirmed to BNS on Friday that he was applying for the job.

The port's former CEO Eugenijus Gentvilas told BNS on Monday that on December 21, just ahead of the launch of the competition, Transport Minister Rimantas Sinkevičius  changed the specific requirements for the position to include a degree in technical sciences, thus precluding lawyers, economists, and other professionals from applying.

Vaitkus had worked as secretary of the Transport Ministry for six years before resigning in 2009 to take up the job of logistics director at Achemos Grupė (Achema Group) and a seat on the management board at KLASCO. He later became the managing director at Achemarida, another company of the group.

Roma Museckiene, the port's infrastructure and development director, has been named the interim CEO of the port after Gentvilas, a member of the Liberal Movement, quit the job to take up a seat in the Seimas (parliament).
