Ukrainian PM promises to consider ways to supply power to Lithuania

Ukrainian Prime Minister Mykola Azarov, who visited Vilnius on Thursday, said that Lithuania's wish to import electricity from Ukraine will be considered, but underlined that this requires agreements with Belarus.

"We did discuss these two issues with the prime minister. As to electricity supply between Lithuania and Ukraine, you have to look at the map. Belarus lies between us. The prime minister raised the issue of electricity supply. We will discuss (it) with our Belorussian partners," he told reporters after meeting Lithuanian Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius.

Azarov noted that currently "there are certain technical problems" that prevent Ukraine from supplying electricity to Lithuania.

"We have offered Lithuania the possibility of importing electricity via Ukraine. There are certain technical problems due to the route having to cross Belarus' territory. I think that this problem can be solved," he said.

Virgilijus Poderys, CEO of Lithuania's electricity transmission system operator Litgrid, has said that due to frequent cutoffs of lines between Belarus and Ukraine because of political or other reasons, Lithuania cannot, either technically or economically, import cheaper nuclear power from Ukraine.

Lithuania now imports about 65 percent of its electricity.
