Utility bills in Lithuania rise 5 times faster than salaries

While average wages in Lithuania have increased by 5.6 percent over the past two years, average household spending on utilities has soared by 27 percent, the daily Lietuvos Žinios reports.

According to data from the payment administration company Viena Sąskaita, the average household spending on utilities was up by 135.8 litas (EUR 39.4) on average to 635 litas in the first quarter of 2012, from 499.2 litas in the same period in 2010, compared with an increase of 78 litas, to 1,661.9 litas from 1,583.9 litas, in the average net monthly salary.

Households spent more than 38 percent of their incomes on utility bills in the first quarter of this year, up from over 31 percent two years ago. The percentage is forecast to grow to more than 42 percent next year.

Viena Sąskaita forecasts that in the first quarter of 2013, if this winter is similar to the one in 2010 and 2011, households living on average incomes will have to spend about 44 percent of their income to pay utility bills.
