Ambassador to EU: Arbitration and not national interests will be key task of Lithuania's EU presidency

One of the key challenges for Lithuania as the presiding country of the European Union (EU) will be understanding its tasks as arbitrator in the search for compromise, says Raimundas Karoblis, ambassador at Lithuania's permanent mission to the EU.

"One of the key challenges is to understand that the presiding country is an arbitrator of all EU member-states, not a country that expresses its interests. The main task for us will be to seek compromise among member-states on the proposals that the European Commission will have proposed and continue the harmonization of the compromise already achieved among countries with the European Parliament," Karoblis said in an interview to Lietuvos Žinios daily.

"Of course, we always know the national interests of Lithuania; however, the main objective during the six months of presidency will be finding solutions that are acceptable for everyone," the ambassador said.

During EU presidency in the second half of this year, Lithuania will host about 180 presidency events including 16 ministerial-level meetings. The biggest event is scheduled for November 28-29 when leaders of EU member-states and Eastern Partnership countries should meet in Vilnius.
