In an open letter sent on Thursday, Lithuanian bishops emphasized their support to Lithuania's EU membership.
"The Church never questioned the development direction of Lithuania – prior to the referendum on Lithuania's accession to the European Union, bishops urged the society to support membership. At the same time, we have always said that unification ambitions of the continent – sustainable peace and well-being – cannot be achieved by giving up basic values. The union will meet the expectations of its creators and all Europeans, if it respects human nature, respects its dignity and legitimate rights, fosters solidarity, family and religious traditions," the bishops said.
They emphasized that morals should not be forgotten on the path to well-being.
"Seeking a balanced budget, a reliable euro, and creation of new jobs are very good. However, it is important to remember that economic stability largely depends on an attitude towards people and their moral capacities, empowerment of which can significantly contribute to the society's well-being. Please note that encouraging and protection of a person's independence, responsibility, and creative skills are a far stronger impetus for social accord, and therefore should always be part of the European Union's agenda," reads the letter.
Lithuania will take EU presidency on July 1 for six months.
