EU attitude to Ukraine will depend on Yulia Tymoshenko case, Lithuanian foreign minister says

The attitude of some EU member states to the signing of the Association Agreement with Ukraine depends on the settlement of the case of ex-Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius says.

"The question of Yulia Tymoshenko is seen in some countries as a symbol. You may like it or not, but it's a fact. The attitude of these countries depends on how this problem is resolved," Linkevičius said in an interview with Interfax-Ukraine.

"The imprisonment of a former political opponent, despite all arguments, looks, mildly speaking, not very good, even very bad," he said.

The Lithuanian foreign minister underlined that "the best solution to this problem is to release" Tymoshenko.

The EU is yet to decide whether to sign and Association Agreement with Ukraine during the upcoming Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in the fall. The summit will take place under the Lithuanian EU presidency.
