Fewer Lithuanians killed by alcohol, more by tobacco

The number of alcohol-related deaths fell slightly in Lithuania last year. Meanwhile, more people died of lung cancer caused by excessive smoking, figures have shown.

According to data by the Institute of Hygiene, there were 927 alcohol-related deaths recorded in Lithuania in 2011, 35 fewer then in 2010. The main cause of deaths was liver cirrhosis (49 percent of cases), followed by accident alcohol poisoning (33.2 percent) and alcoholic cardiomyopathy (12.7 percent).

Compared to 2010, the number of alcohol-related deaths among women rose by almost a fifth but was still three times lower then male death rate.

Meanwhile, the number of people who died of tobacco-related malignant tumors was 1,645 last year, up by 68 as compared to 2010. The majority (84.1 percent) of cases involved men.
