"We keep receiving the latest updates about the situation in the Czech Republic from the European Commission and are ready to immediately take the most rigid market restriction measures in case of a threat to the health of Lithuanian consumers. Furthermore, it is crucial to urge the Lithuanian population to refrain from drinking alcohol of vague origin without any labels," Zenonas Stanevičius, deputy director of the agency, said in a press release on Monday.

Czech institutions said the unsafe alcoholic beverages had not been legally sold in other European Union (EU) countries, reads the press release.

The State Food and Veterinary Service said it was carrying out control of wholesale companies importing alcohol from the Czech Republic and has selected samples of strong drinks manufactured in the Czech Republic to evaluate their safety to consumers.

Some 19 people died of methanol poisoning in the Czech Republic, another 29 remain in hospital.
