Lithuanian Geological Service chief Juozas Mockevičius steps down

Juozas Mockevičius, the director of the Lithuanian Geological Service under the Environment Ministry, is leaving his post on September 6 , following 14 years in the service, the daily Lietuvos Rytas reports.

"He handed in his resignation last Friday and I have no grounds not to accept it. This was his decision," it quoted Environment Minister Valentinas Mazuronis as saying.

Mockevičius was tight-lipped about his resignation. "I can neither confirm nor deny this," he said.

The director of the Geological Service did not shun discussions of various levels about shale gas in Lithuania. He has actively supported the view that Lithuania must find out if it has shale gas reserves and if it is extractable.

However, Mockevičius thinks that the postponement of a decision on whether to name the US energy giant Chevron the winner of a shale gas exploration and extraction tender was justified.
